Something I love more than anything?
Having a conversation! In person, over the phone, over skype. For me, nothing replaces conversations in real time, in real life. I love conversations so much ... it's just a natural part of who I am.
How often do you hold back on reaching out to someone you'd really love to have a conversation with?
Maybe you think, 'I'd love to get to know that person', but then you think 'I probably shouldn't, they might not want to'. But how do you know if you don't ask?
How often do you wish you could send that message to someone and you think 'oh, I probably shouldn't' or 'that feels a bit daunting', or 'I'll only be another email in their inbox'. But what if you did? You never know what might happen.
You just never know how much they might love you to pop into their inbox space!
I, for one, love emails that ask me to engage in conversation! I'm the kind of person who will jump right in and respond, or pick up the phone and call. It's just my way of being, and I love conversations that are mutually enriching.
How often do you scroll through social media, following people you like, reading their words, loving some of the things they're saying, but not letting them know, or letting them get to know you too.
Social media's a funny thing like that. It's wonderful for connection at a certain level, but if you want to have quality engagement with others, it's about building relationships, which to me, means conversations in real life (or over the phone), not just through comments on posts, or DM's.
This is what I love most. More than anything. Getting to know people. Getting to speak to people. In real time, in real life. Not just through voice memos. But getting to meet someone face to face (or as best as that can be, in person, or through skpe or zoom, or facetime). Getting to understand who someone is. And having that conversation or conversations that honestly can change our hearts and our lives. Not only in deep and profound ways, but in really fun and uplifting ways too (there's nothing like a good laugh with someone face to face).
I've had times where I've held back because of doubt, or wondering how my 'asking to connect' might be receieved. But it's these moments and times I've done just that, sent that email, sent that voice message, asked that person if we can talk - and they've said yes - that have brought the most meaning and change to my life.
It's all about opening ourselves up to new possibilites and expansion. And conversations are the most beautiful way we can truly do just this!
We can have so many boundaries around ourselves these days. I understand it, especially if we have full lives, and we work with other people every day. Boundaries are necessary for us all. But I often wonder when we create such strong boundaries, if we then prevent new connections from coming into our lives. In whatever way that might be. But if our boundaries weren't so firm, but instead more flexible, we may just let more people in who can really engage with, and have enriching and powerful conversations with. The most meaningful relationships are built in this way.
I'm a bit unusual these days, I think. Or perhaps I'm just 'old school'. I love picking up the phone and calling someone. To me, that means more than any voice message, or email, or DM. Even if it's just a 5 minute conversation, that's what comes naturally to me. And in many ways, because I remember life without social media, I feel so much how our connections have changed. But I haven't as a person. And people who know me, know how much I love conversations and I'm just that kind of person, and I always will be.
When I worked in private practice for many years, seeing clients face to face was my favourite thing. Changing to an online business was quite challenging. It still is at times. There's a difference between real life sessions and being with someone in person, to seeing someone over skype. And I still value being in person with someone whenever I can.
These days, coaching can be over voice mail or voxer. And I love that voice exchange. But still to me, there's that 'boundary' or that 'delay'. And it never replaces face to face conversation where you can respond in the moment. Or picking up the phone. And this is just naturally who I am and how I love to engage with others.
It's these quality conversations that enrich my life and that bring the most meaning, in every way. And I always encourage and welcome people to connect with me in this way.
I've had many heart opening conversations with people over the years, and I know the power of one insight, of just one thing someone says or a question someone asks, and how this can change so much. I've seen this with clients. And I've felt this within myself. Just that feeling you have with someone, and you know from a conversation that something's diferent, something's changed, and you're just so grateful for that conversation. Wherever it leads, it doesn't matter. It's the quality of that meaningful exchange.
There's nothing better or more wholesome or nourishing than a good conversation. And I know many coaches call these 'free 15 minute discovery calls' ... but I don't. It couldn't be further than that, in my mind.
To me, it's just a conversation. It's not about being 'free'. It doesn't have a time limit. It's not an interview. It's not about or selling anything. It's just a conversation we get to have together. Just getting to know and understand each other. And I love this more than anything. Being completely unattached to any outcome. Just a natural conversation, getting to know one another, talking about all kinds of different things.
The opportunities, the possibilities that can come through beautiful conversations, can open up so much. We just never know. And that's the exciting thing.
This is how I work, and this is just how I am. With clients, with any new connections and new friends.
I know how life changing conversations can be. It's what I love so much about being a human being! These beautiful opportunities we have to engage and to connect through the art of conversation and getting to know each other. Why else do we co-exist and live in this world together, if it isn't to have conversations with all kinds of different people from all walks of life?
It's what I love more than anything.
